Common Honda Repairs We See

The 2007 to 2011 Civic with the automatic transmission is a regular visitor. The torque converter fails and causes a shudder between 25 and 45 mph. Honda issued a TSB for this, and we can replace the torque converter without replacing the whole transmission if you catch it early. On the 2016 and newer Civics with the 1.5L turbo, we see oil dilution where fuel mixes into the oil. That's worse in cold climates but still happens here. We recommend 5,000-mile oil changes instead of the 10,000-mile interval the manual suggests.

The 3.5L V6 in the Accord, Odyssey, and Pilot has a timing belt that needs replacement at 105,000 miles. This is an interference engine, so if the belt breaks, the pistons hit the valves and the engine is done. We replace the belt, tensioner, water pump, and thermostat all at the same time. The VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) system on these V6s also causes cylinder misfire codes and oil consumption. We can disable VCM with a plug-in module if you prefer, which extends engine life.

CR-V AC compressor failures are common on 2002 to 2006 models and again on 2015 to 2017 models. The compressor seizes and sends metal shavings through the entire AC system. We flush the lines, replace the compressor, condenser, and expansion valve, and install a new receiver drier. We also see CR-V AC condensers cracking from road debris. We replace them with an upgraded design that holds up better.
