Common Nissan Repairs We See

The CVT transmission in the 2007 to 2016 Altima is the most common major repair we do on Nissans. The transmission starts slipping, shuddering, or going into fail-safe mode. Nissan extended the CVT warranty on some of these years to 7 years or 84,000 miles, so check your VIN with us first. If you're out of warranty, we can replace the CVT with a remanufactured unit. We also install Jasper transmissions with a 3-year, 100,000-mile warranty. The key is to change the CVT fluid every 30,000 miles, not the 60,000 Nissan suggests. The fluid breaks down and the belt starts slipping.

The 2005 to 2014 Pathfinder has a chronic coolant leak inside the transmission. The transmission oil cooler is built into the radiator, and when the internal seal fails, coolant mixes with the CVT fluid. That destroys the transmission. If you have a Pathfinder in that year range, we recommend installing an external transmission cooler and bypassing the radiator cooler. We also see the same issue on the Xterra and Frontier with the same platform.

On the 2.5L QR25DE engine in the Altima and Sentra, we see timing chain tensioner failure around 100,000 miles. You'll hear a rattle on startup that lasts a few seconds. If you ignore it, the chain can jump and bend valves. We replace the timing chain, tensioner, and guides. We also see a lot of Nissan AC compressor failures, especially on the Rogue and Murano. The clutch bearing seizes and the compressor locks up.
